Saint Ambrose (ca. AD 340–397) was the bishop of Milan, a theologian, and a biblical critic. Born into a Roman Christian family, Aurelius Ambrosius began a career in public service before being elected bishop of Milan. At first Ambrose fled into hiding, but then accepted service in the church as God’s calling, received baptism, and renounced his family wealth. He is remembered for helping to convert and baptize Augustine of Hippo, as well as for his eloquence in defending church teachings in both speech and writing.
