W. H. Auden (1907–1973) was an English-born poet and political activist. His early poems were published while he was still a student at the University of Oxford. During the Great Depression, he became a hero of the left, writing several stage dramas in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood. In 1939 Auden immigrated to the United States. He revised and presented his poetry in two volumes: Collected Shorter Poems 1927–57 (1967) and Collected Longer Poems (1969).
