The older brother of theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Klaus Bonhoeffer (1901–1945) was a jurist and legal adviser for Lufthansa. In 1930 he married Emilie “Emmi” Delbrück; they had three children: Thomas, Cornelia, and Walter. In 1944, Klaus was arrested, along with several other family members, for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. (Emmi was also involved in the resistance but escaped notice; she later became known for her work with German-Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, and with Amnesty International.) On February 2, 1945, the People’s Court sentenced Klaus to death and on April 22 he was executed.
