In 1998, along with a few other recent college graduates, Shane Claiborne founded the Simple Way, a community in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood that seeks to live out the revolutionary vision of the Sermon on the Mount: peacemaking, racial reconciliation, and a life rich in relationships instead of possessions. When many other young people were inspired by the Simple Way to start communities of their own, Claiborne emerged as a leading voice in the movement of intentional, urban, Christian communal living known as New Monasticism.
