Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970) was a German writer most famous for his novel All Quiet on the Western Front. Drafted into the German army at age eighteen, Remarque served in the trenches during World War I. After the war, he worked in a variety of jobs while writing several books, most notably All Quiet on the Western Front, probably the most well-known novel about World War I. His books were banned by the Nazis in 1933.
