Desmond Tutu (1931–2021) was a South African Anglican cleric who received the 1984 Nobel Prize for Peace for his role in opposing apartheid in South Africa. Born in Klerksdorp, Tutu studied at St. Peter’s Theological Seminary. He received a Master’s degree from King’s College in London in 1966. During the 1980s, he was a leading spokesperson for the rights of Black South Africans.
