At age seventeen, Cozine Welch Jr. was sentenced to twenty-two to forty years in a Michigan prison. While incarcerated he became the most published writer in the Michigan Review of Prisoner Creative Writing, appearing in nine consecutive volumes. Since being released last September he has been published in the Michigan Quarterly Review, Periphery, and other journals. He is currently co-teaching the Atonement Project at the University of Michigan, a course that focuses on restorative justice, reconciliation, and atonement. A lyric poet and performer of slam poetry, he is also an accomplished guitarist, singer, and songwriter.
